Chaos Space Marine Test Mini

This is the first member of the CSM contingent of my army. As I've mentioned before, I want them to look like Space marines that have just recently turned to chaos. That's why I've use both loyalist and chaos parts.

The gold parts are just the first layer. I was more concerned about the color of grey for the armor. Honestly, I think I need to go a lot lighter. The base coat of this one was Charadon Granite, which is very dark. Over that, I painted a layer of a 1:1 mix of Charadon Granite and Skull white. I shaded that with another layer of Charadon Granite. It looks better, but I think I'll go a shade or two lighter. I have a bottle of Vallejo medium grey that I might try.

I also tried a little painted-on battle damage. You can see a couple chips out of the figure's right fore arm and elbow guard. I think if decide to do that, I need to do more of it so that the over-all effect of damage comes through. At this point, it just looks like I made a couple mistakes with the paint brush.

I would really appreciate people's input on this one. Keep in mind, it's a work in progress and I'll be adding a lot more detail later.

I like the grey so far - might help to see the figure in real life. Another color option is to blend brown with the grey instead of white - it might give you a few more options for blending without needing to go bright.

I may try that. I read somewhere that mixing black and white makes a very unnatural grey. It's beetter to Mix w/ brown or some other color.

I thought that Charadon Granite had enough brown undertones that I woulndn't need to, but maybe you're right. I had tried to blend it with roting flesh, but that didn't work too well.

You may notice, though, that I used brown for some of the shading. Look at the back of the gauntlet and the left leg.

Hmmm I am not loving the grey because I am thinking about your whole army with the two squads of Ksons. I'd recommend a weathered bone & gold or
a some shade of brown and gold, both should work up well from that grey you have, keeping gold as the unifying trim color is cool idea, but greys and blues (ala you sons) are too Marine-ish for me. Chaos armies
always have bolder colors..deep red, like maroon would great in your army too.
Whatever you end up going with I am sure it will be great, looking forward to it!!

I'm going with the looks good group.

I personally like the dark look, if they just turned to Choas, they have better things to do than swing by the armoury for some regularly scheduled maintenence and cleaning.
I think the battle damage looks good too, it does not appear to be a "mistake." Battle damage can be hard to pull of convincingly... I think it's one of those things where less is more.

Old Coast mentioned the rest of your army. That's a good point, while the individual color scheme here might be a good one, it certainly can't hurt to look at unifying elements and design priciples when adding additional units to an army.

Thanks everyone.

The over-all color theme has definately been a considertion to me. I'm hoping the gold trim will tie it together somewhat.

I also chose grey becasue it's neutral. Obviously, if I chose something like red, it'd really clash.

Waht I'm hoping to come off with these rengades is a very vanilla chapter that has gone rogue. I want an almost work-class utilitarian look to them. Again, grey.

I'm not sure if that makes any sense.
