Moving Forward

As I mentioned in my last post, I was disappointed by how little I blogged in the last year. However, I think I see why. I tried to be a little too ambitious in what I'm doing here. I wanted to add a lot more content (campaign rules and terrain features being good examples).

As it turns out, the Fly Lords of Terra, I am not.
So this year, I want to take it 'back to basics'. When I started blogging (way back in 2006), I just wanted a place to share what I was working on painting-wise. Then I started reading stuff like BOLS and From the Warp and thought, "Oh yeah, that's what I want to be!"

Well, I think I realized that I don't really have the focus, energy, or patience for that. Plus, I have a lot of other things I do besides updating this blog (including a second child on the way in May!WOOT!).
That doesn't mean I won't post battle reports or articles on campaigning: it just means that I'm making no promises. I plan to post as many pictures of my current projects as I can, and if I decide to do more, it's all gravy.

So, that leads me right into my gaming resolutions for 2009 (hey, it's still January, I can still post these!)

First off, I plan to focus on Daemons this year. I want to finish 1,500 pts by the end of the year. I hope I'm not aiming too high, but it seems to me that Daemons paint up pretty fast. Much faster than my Thousand Sons or Space wolves.
Secondly, I plan to work on only one unit at a time. Being a "painting butterfly" is a huge problem for me. For example, in 2008 I started or worked on at least eleven projects but only finished two. Now, I plan to finish a project before I start a new one.

So let me show you what i have been working on...

First off, I just finished these horrors. For some reason, I just can't seem to get a picture of them that I'm happy with. This picture only shows four of them and hopefully, I'll be able to show you the rest as soon as I take a better picture.

Here is my current project:

These guys have been collecting dust in my drawer for a while (he-he, "dust"). I'm maybe one session away from finishing them. This photo shows the Thousand Sons chapter icons I just painting.

More of the Thousand Sons to come in the next couple weeks. Then, it's daemons, daemons, daemons!!!!

I sympathize with your blog dilemma. On the one hand you want to make your blog the best it can possibly be and you probably have a million ideas for it; on the other hand you have to be realistic about how much time you can spend on it.

I think it's a good thing that you've made a conscious decision to pull back a little. I know I turned a corner when I felt my blog was feeling more like work than pleasure and I realised that my blog was there to serve my hobby, not replace it.

It's also a good idea to reign back the number of projects you attempt. Better to complete three and then paint a few odds and ends when you can than to kill yourself completing three and feeling disappointed when you haven't finished six.

Cool Thousand Sons by the way.

Keep it up!

I know what it's like to curb your efforts and try to focus on one thing... especially when your time is limited.

Congrats on the upcoming arrival and striving for that balance between your hobby and everything else.

"Painting butterfly..." I never heard it said like that before but it fits. I like it.

The thousand sons and pink horrors are looking great. I like the way the pink horror limbs change their shade to blue half-way down.

I do like your thousand sons models quite a bit. The shoulder-pad icons are nicely done.

Well done my friend! I can't wait to see these in person.

As for once wanting to be the next BoLS - remember that its not all Big Red. There are like 6 or 7 of them that all post - some more than others. You can't compete with that time wise.

Plus, those dudes are nuts. Their enthusiasm for the hobby and the amount of time that they put into it is way beyond us. We just have to revel in that when we do finish a model - it looks hot!

Keep it up Scott!

Thanks everyone.

John -Sorry I've been out of touch, but yeah, Clare's due May 1st. Most likely a girl (ultra sounds aren't always accurate, but we're hoping)
